About the Chateau Grand Village Rouge 2019

Le Grand Village is the original Bordeaux home of the Guinaudeau family, better known as the producers of Château Lafleur in Pomerol.

The same team and equal level of detailed attention are dedicated to winemaking in this château in Fronsac on the Right Bank. This results in a red (Merlot/Cabernet Franc) and a white (Sauvignon Blanc/Sémillon) wine which far outstrip their nominal Bordeaux Supérieur status, creating some of the most exciting releases in the appellation.

If one wants to glimpse into the Guinaudeau’s savoir-faire, then Grand Village is an unmissable addition to any cellar.

Tasting Notes

Colour: Deep maroon
Nose: A gorgeous dark nose with some perfumed black cherries, it smells faintly sweet and softly floral – so welcoming.
Palate: A similar soft, sweetness follows on the palate straight away with such perfumed edges that are completely captivating. Succulent with clarity and soft chalky tannins plumping up the blackcurrant, Morello cherry and raspberry fruit. There’s also a very specific iron filing, iodine salinity that lingers giving such texture and nuance to the overall frame. The finish is fresh and direct with a cooling sensation that lingers. (Decanter)
Grape Varieties: 81% Merlot, 19% Bouchet (Cabernet Franc)
Aging: 12 months barrel ageing (30% new oak, 40% one year old barrels, 30% two years old barrels). Bottled the second April after harvest.
Awards: 94pts – Decanter; 93pts – Wine Advocate-Parker; 92pts – James Suckling; 91+pts – The Wine Independent; 91pts – Vinous

History of Château Lafleur

Château Lafleur is a tiny 4.5-hectare Pomerol property located opposite Pétrus and producing wines of comparable quality. Lafleur is owned and run by Sylvie and Jacques Guinadeau. Its vineyards are situated on the gravel-rich Pomerol plateau and adjoin those of La Fleur-Pétrus. The soils here are particularly deep and are enriched by deposits of potassium and iron. Only natural fertilisers are used and yields are painfully low, even by Pomerol standards.

Lafleur’s wine is typically a blend of Merlot (50%) and Cabernet Franc (50%). It is aged in small oak barrels (50% new) for 18 months. Wines from Lafleur display a spectacularly intense perfume (partly attributable to the high percentage of Cabernet Franc in the blend) and display layers and layers of concentrated, black fruits, minerals, tobacco spices and creamy liquorice on the palate. The best vintages can last for up to 50 years.
