Cos d’Estournel 2009

75cl / 14.5%

Totally modern and beautifully done in a distinctly extreme style, and yet this wine maintained its sweetness of fruit for days in the recorked bottle. This is bound to be one of the most controversial wines of the vintage.

About the Cos d’Estournel 2009

Tasting Notes

Colour: Deep garnet colour
Aroma: Features a myriad of wonderfully intense notes, including blackcurrant pastilles, redcurrant jelly, kirsch and blueberry compote with hints of rose hip tea, sautéed herbs, underbrush, pencil shavings and Indian spices. Fat, lush, saline and sweet, conveying an impression of extreme port-like ripeness.
Palate: Huge, mouth-saturating flavors of dark berries and chocolate. Not heavy but doesn’t exactly dance on the palate. Finishes with flecks of warm stone and iron coupled with a boatload of ripe, broad tannins and palate-staining fruit.
Grape Varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot
Awards: 100pts – Wine Advocate-Parker; 98pts – James Suckling; 97pts – Wine Spectator

Powerful and yet velvety, this is an extravagant Saint-Estephe wine. Extremely precise tannins. Great potential to age. Best from 2020 to 2040 and beyond. Only 20,830 cases were ever made.

History of Chateau Cos d’Estournel

Chateau Cos d’Estournel lies at the entrance to Saint-Estèphe, ideally situated at the heart of an undulating landscape in the northern Médoc. The estate’s rolling contours served as inspiration for its name; ”cos” is derived from the word for “hill of pebbles” in the old Gascon dialect. Classified as a Second Growth Bordeaux estate, Cos d’Estournel is without doubt, one of the top producers in the St. Estephe appellation, producing complex and intense, full-bodied wines.

The chateau is often referred to as “”super second,”” meaning that it produces wines at a quality nearing that of the First Growth houses. Cos d’Estournel wines contain a large amount of Merlot (40%), one of the highest percentages in the region, in fact; this gives the wines their wonderful fleshy, chewy texture.
