Named for the ‘fusing’ together of Bordeaux’s five famous varietals (Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Merlot and Malbec), De Toren Fusion V celebrated its maiden vintage in 1999, at the same time marking the De Toren Private Cellar’s much anticipated first release.
Born of vineyards that are high in gravel content and benefit from prolonged exposure to the afternoon sun – conditions, in other words, that favour the cultivation of Cabernet Sauvignon – it is this intensely hued, robust flavoured varietal that, at 50 to 60%, forms the backbone of the formidable final blend.
Colour: Cherry red color with ruby red rims.
Nose: Blackberry, plum and currant fruit aromas form the bouquet of this enticing red, with additional notes of cedar box, pipe tobacco and licorice root.
Palate: The palate is smooth and velvety in feel, with moderate tannins that frame the plush fruit flavors and offer lingering grip and structure through the close. Final impressions of black plum skin and cigar box spice carry the finish. With nuanced and complexed flavours, our renowned De Toren Fusion V wine pairs exceptionally well with perfectly tender grilled or roast lamb, with garlic, rosemary and a hint of honey lemon. For optimum enjoyment, decant at least one hour before consumption. It is recommended to serve this wine at optimal temperature (15 – 18 degrees Celcius).
Grape Varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon 51% , Malbec 16%, Cabernet Franc 15%, Merlot 13%, Petit Verdot 5%
Aging: Aged in a climatized barrel room (16 degrees Celsius at 80% humidity) for 12 months in 225L French and American Oak. The Malbec had the benefit of American Oak.
Awards: 93pts – Wine Enthusiast; 95pts – Tim Atkin; 95pts – Decanter Wine Magazine
History of De Toren
De Toren was South Africa’s first-ever gravity-fed cellar, designed to facilitate the gentlest movement of our wines. The estate’s vineyards were designed from the ground up to produce world-class wines and enormous attention was given to where and how each vineyard was planted.
The design of our iconic Left- and Right-Bordeaux-styled blends were planned and decided upon after which the vines were planted to match the make-up of these wines. Crafting a blended wine is like painting, with each texture, aroma, and flavor being a different color. Our vineyards and winemaking methods are designed to ensure excellence, every sip of De Toren wine is, and should always be, a memory of the fruit’s perfection.
