Tasting Notes

Colour: The colour is intense, a dark red with brilliant highlights.
Aroma: The supremely elegant nose displays red fruit aromas with touches of spice.
Palate: Delicious with a gorgeous ripe fruit with hints of chocolate, lightly toasted oak and blueberries. Salty and savory. Long and very caressing. But then it goes on for a long, long time with firm tannins.
Grape Varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon 90%, Merlot 7%, Cabernet Franc 3%

History of Mouton Rothschild

In 1853, Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild, wishing to serve his own wine to his prestigious guests, buys Château Brane-Mouton at an auction. The estate, at Pauillac in the heart of the Médoc, will henceforth bear his name: Château Mouton Rothschild.

In 1973, Mouton was elevated to “first growth” status after decades of intense lobbying by its powerful and influential owner. This prompted a change of motto: previously, the motto of the wine was Premier ne puis, second ne daigne, Mouton suis. (“First, I cannot be. Second, I do not deign to be. Mouton I am.”), and it was changed to Premier je suis, Second je fus, Mouton ne change. (“First, I am. Second, I used to be. Mouton does not change.”)

In 2003, Château Mouton Rothschild celebrates its 150th anniversary. Baroness Philippine left Mouton magnificently enlarged and modernised. Now her three children are united in the same ambition.
