This wine is dry on the edge of off-dry with a nice long citrus zest finish. Lingering minerality on the back of the palette, tastes like a wet stone smells.

Tasting Notes

Colour: Pale greenish-yellow
Aroma: Aromatic white peach, pear, white blossoms, apricots, and tangerines.
Palate: Fine dry wine made from crisp, healthy greenish-yellow grapes. Slow, cool fermentation. Lively and fresh Riesling with “crunchy” fruit and refreshing well balanced acidity. Delicately fruity with a mineral touch, not “sweet”. All that delights the tongue and senses with great length and structure. Lots of flavor with a refreshing low “weight” of alcohol. Pairs well with hot spicy foods, cured meats, and seafood.

History of Selbach

Selbach-Oster is a German wine producer located in the Mosel Valley, a wine region famous for extremely steep slopes, slate soils, and Riesling. The Selbach family has been producing wine in the region for more than 400 years. Selbach-Oster owns 24 hectares (59 acres) of well-known vineyard land planted mainly to ungrafted Riesling and some Pinot Blanc in the Middle Mosel. Regarded as the “”golden mile””, the steep, south-facing hectares stretch from Zeltingen to Bernkastel and include the vineyards Zeltinger Himmelreich, Zeltinger Schlossberg, Zeltinger Sonnenuhr, Wehlener Sonnenuhr and Graacher Domprobst.

Selbach-Oster produces a full range of Riesling wine styles, from completely dry to botrytized dessert wines. Its style aims to express the high minerality of Mosel Riesling with relatively low alcohol. Indigenous, wild yeast is used to ferment the hand-picked fruit after harvest and half of the wine produced spends time in large oak barrels called foudres.

The wines are made by Johannes Selbach, but until a new winery is built they are not made under the same roof as Selbach-Oster. Even when that day comes, do not confuse the two; Selbach-Oster will always be the premium range, exclusively estate-bottled from vineyards owned and worked by Selbach.
