In 1824, before our founder George Smith licensed his distillery, the remote Glenlivet valley was the perfect location for the illicit scotch whisky trade, with distilleries handcrafting in smaller copper stills in bothies well hidden from the law. It was there in the isolated valley that George Smith would learn his craft.
Slowly and carefully distilling what would soon become the world-renowned single malt scotch whisky that established the signature fruity floral Speyside style. This limited-edition malt has not been chill filtered, giving you an authentic taste of our history.

History of The Glenlivet
The remote and isolated Livet valley made it ideal for illicit distillation. This is where our founder George Smith learned his craft. Hidden away from the Customs Officers and soldiers amongst the hills and abundant springs, George had time to distil slowly making a whisky that would soon become world renowned. In August 1822, King George IV arrived in Scotland for a state visit and asked to try a drop of the infamous Glenlivet whisky. An illegal dram it was, but even that didn’t stop the King.
Our founder George Smith was the first in the glen to legally distil single malt whisky nearly 200 years ago. He established himself as an original thinker and defined the Speyside style of whisky, and now doing things differently is simply the way we get things done.
To this day we continue George Smith’s vision to break traditions, set new standards and move things forward; selecting exceptional unique casks, finishes and liquids and delivering unique serves and cocktails to open up the world of single malt to all.
Our mission is to open the world of single malt to all. Our new campaign, “Original by Tradition” shows our tradition is breaking traditions, in whisky and in culture in order to move things forward and set new standards.
After all, what would George Smith do? Try something different, you might just discover your new favourite. Here at The Glenlivet we’ve never been afraid to mix things up.
