UNIQUE CASK HISTORY
Dr. Bill Lumsden was astonished by Cask No. 0911, as he tasted it in the quiet calm of Warehouse 3, right on the Atlantic shore. Peppery and herbal, this single cask shows a very different side to Ardbeg.
This whisky, which presents a sublimely smoky and balanced flavour, was distilled on Thursday 13th April 1995 during a time when Ardbeg’s own future seemed uncertain. At the time, the Distillery was operating only occasionally and its doors seemed likely to close for good. That day, against the odds, Distillery Manager Iain Henderson and his dedicated team laid down a small batch of spirit in refill bourbon casks determined to preserve Ardbeg’s sweet and smoky taste.
Most of these rare casks have since been picked out for the prestigious bottling Ardbeg 25 Years Old. But recognising this cask’s singularity, Dr. Bill kept it aside to be savoured in its own right. Aged for more than 28 years, with peppery, herbal aromas and surprising tastes of orchard fruits, Cask No. 0911 is a delightful contrast to Ardbeg’s signature style.

Tasting Notes
Colour: Pale Gold
Nose: Beautifully herbal with white pepper, the heat of jalapeño peppers and green bell peppers emerging, before notes of celeriac come to the fore. The smoke is extraordinarily subtle, laced with notes of vanilla fudge. A little water brings forth notes of apricot and nectarine, along with smoky tea leaves and fragrant carbolic soap.
Palate: Pear and green apples surge on the palate, with well-oiled leather and caramelised sugar. Then sweet herbal smoke and more gentle spice emerge at the finish.
History of Ardbeg
Ardbeg has been called “as close to perfection as makes no difference,” by whisky connoisseurs. Proof then, that Ardbeg truly deserves its incredible reputation. It’s a whisky that’s worshipped around the world. Six different Ardbeg expressions have won prestigious titles including World Whisky of the Year, Scotch Whisky of the Year and World’s Best Single Malt. The small, remote Scottish island of Islay (pronounced ‘eye-lah’) is an antique land. A wild and untamed place, where Celtic monks found refuge from raiding Norsemen and early distillers smuggled their illicit “aquavitae” at Ardbeg’s rugged rocky cove.
Abundant soft water, fertile soil and acres of precious peat makes this island a place of pilgrimage for the single malt whisky faithful. And none more so than our very own Ardbeg, unquestionably the greatest distillery on Earth. For over 200 years, Ardbeg has been made on Islay. Some people travel to Ardbeg along the winding road from Port Ellen. Others follow their nose, their destiny or the advice of a good friend.
