History of Chateau Margaux
Château Margaux is one of the most prestigious and historically significant wine estates in Bordeaux, France. It is classified as a First Growth under the Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855, which designates it as one of the premier wine producers in the region. The estate’s history dates back to the 12th century, with wine production beginning in earnest in the 16th century. The château itself, an architectural masterpiece, was built in the early 19th century and is often referred to as the “Versailles of the Médoc.” Since 1977, the estate has been owned by the Mentzelopoulos family, who have invested significantly in maintaining and enhancing the château’s vineyards and winemaking facilities.
In 1855, Château Margaux was classified as a Premier Grand Cru Classé (First Growth), one of only five estates to receive this top honor, reflecting its exceptional quality and reputation. Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux, the estate’s second wine, is made from younger vines and parcels not included in the Grand Vin. It offers a more accessible, yet still highly refined, expression of the estate’s terroir.
