About the Wild Earth Reserve ‘Earth and Sky’ Pinot Noir 2019

This wine is a blend of three Bannockburn vineyards ranging from 10 to 19 years old. One of the sites is planted on the sandier soils of Cairnmuir Road and the other two border the Bannockburn Sluicings, a distinctive geographic landmark that is steeped in mining history.

The grapes from these vineyards were fermented separately with a range of 0-50% whole clusters with the resulting blend having around 15% whole clusters which aids the tannin structure and aromatics of the wine.

Tasting Notes

Colour: Bright ruby
Nose: A seductive nose of cherry, plum, lilac, incense, cedar, earthy loam and wild thyme. This Pinot Noir is laden with perfume and intricate detail, expressing a gracefulness that is the hallmark of great sites in a cooler growing season.
Palate: This is an elegant expression of the Bannockburn sub-region with lovely red and blue fruit, camphor and florals supported by fine tannins that are intricately woven around the fresh acidity. The length is exemplary and the savoury complexity is full of intrigue. This wine is a pleasure to drink young but will continue to develop for a decade or so, making it a great option for the cellar. Match with quail and duck, drink over the next 5-8 years.
Grape Varieties: 100% Pinot Noir
Ageing: Aged in fine grain French oak: 22% new and the rest in 2-5 years old barriques for approximately 12 months.
Awards: 92pts – Wine Enthusiast

New Zealand has received a lot of attention for their stunning, world-class Sauvignon Blanc wines, but maybe their most exciting wine is Pinot Noir. These wines are direct and thoughtful, brimming with fresh red cherries, fresh cut roses, and a little bit of wet earth. These might be the best Pinot Noir values in the world!
