Tyrrell’s 8 Acres Shiraz 2023

75cl / 13.5%

“The 2022 8 Acres Shiraz seems to me to be the synthesis of 4 Acres and Johnno’s. It has the supple, persistent drive of 4 Acres and the structure and filling of Johnno’s. Together, they sing. This is excellent. It is supple, herbal, leafy and spicy, with notes of roses, tobacco, jasmine, lavender, black tea, peppercorns (pink and black and a few Sichuan), pomegranate, raspberry, iodine and blood plum. It is gorgeous, exciting, affirming. Drink: 2023 – 2048.”

About the Tyrrell’s 8 Acres Shiraz 2023

The 8 Acres vineyard was planted in 1892 and sits just below the 4 Acres vineyard beside the driveway up to the winery. The vine orientation is north-south, perpendicular to the 4 Acres vines, and the vineyard produces a different style of wine altogether. The fruit is handpicked and sorted in the vineyard before fermentation takes place in our open-top vats with 15% whole bunches. After fermentation, the wine is matured for 14 months in a one-year-old 2700L French oak cask.

Tasting Notes

Colour: The most vivid, almost electric purple hue, with more density of colour compared to 4 Acres.
Nose: The nose is complex, showing dark fruits, with some spice and forest floor like characters, similar to a Pinot Noir.
Palate: A rounder, darker fruited style on the palate. Fleshy and juicy up front, followed by an underlying core of spice that runs through the palate and with a fresh acidity and savoury tannin, that gives the wine its length.
Grape Varieties: 100% Shiraz

History of Tyrrell’s Wines

Established in 1858 by English immigrant Edward Tyrrell, Tyrrell’s Wines is one of Australia’s pre-eminent family owned wine companies with vineyards extending from their historic home in the Hunter Valley NSW to their Heathcote vineyards in Victoria.

The Tyrrell’s Hunter Valley estate has 11 vineyards with vines that are more than 100 years old, which are used to make the Sacred Sites range. One of these releases, Old Patch Shiraz, was awarded a 100-point score by critic James Suckling for four consecutive vintages; 2014, 2017, 2018 and 2019 (none was made in ’15 and ’16).

Tyrrell’s is also home to some of Australia’s most awarded wines including the iconic Vat 1 Semillon. Since 1971, Tyrrell’s has been awarded over 5,000 trophies and medals and in 2010 was named “Winery of the Year” in James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion. Furthermore, the HVD vineyard, planted in 1908, is believed to be the world’s oldest Chardonnay plot. In all, the company owns eight of the 11 oldest vineyards in New South Wales.
