Tyrrell’s Hunter Valley Semillon 2023

75cl / 11.8%

“The opening act to a wonderful suite. Mostly HVD sourcing. Riffs on lemon grass, lime drop, pistachio husk, spa salts and nettle. Light-weighted and effusive of freshness. A little more open-knit and herbaceous, pungent and bright, than the more reticent wines of the upper tier. All the better for breaching earlier. A drape of subtle sweetness across the finish. Delicious.”

About the Tyrrell’s Hunter Valley Semillon 2023

Sourced from a small selection of some of our top Semillon vineyards around the Hunter Valley. Most of the vineyards are dry grown and have an average vine age of 40 years. The grapes were machine picked in the cool of the night before gentle pressing and fermentation in stainless steel tanks. The wine then spent a short amount of time on yeast lees to gain extra complexity and mouth feel.

Tasting Notes

Colour: Bright yellow with hints of green
Nose: Vibrant, bursting with aromas of white flowers, lemon curd and ripe citrus fruits.
Palate: Medium bodied, yet intense, with great length. Notes of pear, star fruit and fresh green herbs mingle on the palate. It is equal parts vibrant and elegant. Refreshing acidity drives a concentrated fruit character. On the finish, steely hints of minerality also reveal themselves. It will be a fantastic wine to pair with a creamy sauce, shellfish, or even a roasted chicken. Drink now or cellar as this amazing wine will continue to evolve and improve into 2032 and possibly beyond.
Grape Varieties: 100% Semillon

History of Tyrrell’s Wines

Established in 1858 by English immigrant Edward Tyrrell, Tyrrell’s Wines is one of Australia’s pre-eminent family owned wine companies with vineyards extending from their historic home in the Hunter Valley NSW to their Heathcote vineyards in Victoria.

The Tyrrell’s Hunter Valley estate has 11 vineyards with vines that are more than 100 years old, which are used to make the Sacred Sites range. One of these releases, Old Patch Shiraz, was awarded a 100-point score by critic James Suckling for four consecutive vintages; 2014, 2017, 2018 and 2019 (none was made in ’15 and ’16).

Tyrrell’s is also home to some of Australia’s most awarded wines including the iconic Vat 1 Semillon. Since 1971, Tyrrell’s has been awarded over 5,000 trophies and medals and in 2010 was named “Winery of the Year” in James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion. Furthermore, the HVD vineyard, planted in 1908, is believed to be the world’s oldest Chardonnay plot. In all, the company owns eight of the 11 oldest vineyards in New South Wales.
