The Coldstream Guard is a proud salute to the Yarra Valley as an internationally recognised, cool climate, winemaking region. This cool-climate expression of Shiraz is the beneficiary of the philosophy, methodology, and stylistic approach applied to its more senior stablemates. The aim of this blend was to ensure a balance of weight and generosity with subtle restraint. A great year for this cool-climate style of Shiraz. This wine is vegan-friendly.
Colour: Clear red with mahagony rims.
Nose: Enticing aromas of red fruits, loganberry, blood plum, pepper, bergamot, malted barley, smoked tea, musk stick, aniseed, and herbal murmurs of stalks.
Palate: The juicy palate evokes a dark fruit profile of black cherry and mulberry with a spice influence redolent of sumac, Sichuan pepper & tamarind. Hints of dark chocolate and fennel frond arise from the long-detailed palate. A fine acidity enmeshes with high volume layered talc-like tannins interweaved with acid line and delicate fruit weight. Goes well with red and white meats, stews, churrasco, small game, fatty fish, rice and pasta as well as seasoned and semi-cured cheeses.
Grape Varieties: 100% Shiraz
History of Levantine Hill
Levantine Hill is rated 5 red stars by James Halliday (Australian wine critic). Even more impressively, Huon Hooke rates them the 30th best winery in the country, ahead of Penfolds, Yangarra, Woodlands, Shaw, and Smith, Torbreck.
Levantine has superb vineyards and growers and a brilliant winemaker in Paul Bridgemen who was formerly the winemaker for Yarra Yering. Levantine’s lofty ambitions are well encapsulated by the following quote “We hope this estate will transcend man’s inevitable mortality and brief custodianship of all things material.
Fortunately, the proof is in the bottle as confirmed by Jeremy Oliver who says “Levantine Hill produces wines of European elegance and subtlety and its quality aspirations are frankly inspiring.
