Prestigious signature of the house, the Frédéric Emile, often nicknamed FE or Freddie, is sought after by connoisseurs and collectors. Exposed south and south-east, the Grands Crus Geisberg and Osterberg terroirs of Ribeauvillé which overlook the estate have given birth to this wine for several generations. The average age of the vines, around 45 years, offers limited yields.
The marl-limestone-sandstone and shell limestone composition of the terroir (Muschelkalk), as well as the well-ripened grapes strictly selected by hand, give this wine a remarkable personality: a dry and powerful Riesling, underlined by a mineral note and with finely chopped acidity.
Tasting Notes
Colour: Pale gold
Aroma: Fresh nose of green apple, quince lime and herbs.
Palate: Minty, almost peppery flavors of green fig, apple and gooseberry. Finishes long and suave with zippy acidity and a hint of minerality at the back. This is still very young but magically combines precision, concentration and refinement as only this cuvée manages. Strikes me as an earlier maturing version of Fréderic Emile, but will undoubtedly be another great star in this wine’s constellation history. (Vinous) Pair with delicate fish, caviar, fine white meats. Aging potential of 20 years or more.
Grape Varieties: 100% Riesling
Awards: 96pts – James Suckling; 95pts – Wine Enthusiast; 93pts – Wine Advocate-Parker; 93pts – Wine Spectator; 92pts – Vinous
History of F.E.Trimbach
Maison Trimbach is one of the oldest wineries in the French wine region of Alsace. Dating back to 1626, Trimbach is well-known for its Riesling wines. In particular, one made from the small Clos Sainte Hune vineyard, which is considered one of the finest Alsatian expressions of the grape.
Alongside Riesling, Trimbach has a range of classic Alsace varieties within its wine portfolio. These include Sylvaner, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Blanc, Muscat and Pinot Noir. The collection covers a range of styles, but dry, ageworthy wines with great minerality are Trimbach’s specialty. The house makes a few Vendages Tardives and Selection de Grains Nobles wines, as well as some Eaux-de-Vie in select vintages.
