History of Tyrrell’s Wines
Established in 1858 by English immigrant Edward Tyrrell, Tyrrell’s Wines is one of Australia’s pre-eminent family owned wine companies with vineyards extending from their historic home in the Hunter Valley NSW to their Heathcote vineyards in Victoria.
The Tyrrell’s Hunter Valley estate has 11 vineyards with vines that are more than 100 years old, which are used to make the Sacred Sites range. One of these releases, Old Patch Shiraz, was awarded a 100-point score by critic James Suckling for four consecutive vintages; 2014, 2017, 2018 and 2019 (none was made in ’15 and ’16).
Tyrrell’s is also home to some of Australia’s most awarded wines including the iconic Vat 1 Semillon. Since 1971, Tyrrell’s has been awarded over 5,000 trophies and medals and in 2010 was named “Winery of the Year” in James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion. Furthermore, the HVD vineyard, planted in 1908, is believed to be the world’s oldest Chardonnay plot. In all, the company owns eight of the 11 oldest vineyards in New South Wales.
