Tyrrell’s Stevens Single Vineyard Semillon 2017

75cl / 11.5%

“It’s always fascinating to taste the Tyrrell’s Semillons side by side each year. They’re very similar, yet quite different. They make you prone to saying stupid things. I wrote most of these notes on initial tasting, and I’m coming back to look at the open bottles a day later, just to check on their progress. Crisp, fresh, slight grassiness, light powdery soft chalkiness through it, and more to lemon than lime in the flavour department. Good length. Zips along. Fresh squeezed lemon juice sweetness plays out on the finish. How’s the purity? Tasty now too, though better later.”

About the Tyrrell’s Stevens Single Vineyard Semillon 2017

Stevens Semillon comes from Neil Stevens’ Glen Oak vineyard on Marrowbone Road, our southern-most Semillon vineyard, which features a combination of light, sandy loams and darker, heavier transitional soils. The oldest plantings on this vineyard are from 1911. Fermentation in stainless steel at cool temperatures with some time on lees before bottling.

Tasting Notes

Colour: Light Gold
Nose:
A vibrant citrus lift, along with its typical mineral edge.
Palate:
The palate is tightly bound and has a racy citrus fruit profile that is tight, elegant, and impeccably long with an almost sherbet-like character. One of the better Stevens Semillon releases in recent memory. Drinking very well at six years of age but will evolve gracefully over
the next five to ten years.
Grape Varieties:
100% Semillon

History of Tyrrell’s Wines

Established in 1858 by English immigrant Edward Tyrrell, Tyrrell’s Wines is one of Australia’s pre-eminent family owned wine companies with vineyards extending from their historic home in the Hunter Valley NSW to their Heathcote vineyards in Victoria.

The Tyrrell’s Hunter Valley estate has 11 vineyards with vines that are more than 100 years old, which are used to make the Sacred Sites range. One of these releases, Old Patch Shiraz, was awarded a 100-point score by critic James Suckling for four consecutive vintages; 2014, 2017, 2018 and 2019 (none was made in ’15 and ’16).

Tyrrell’s is also home to some of Australia’s most awarded wines including the iconic Vat 1 Semillon. Since 1971, Tyrrell’s has been awarded over 5,000 trophies and medals and in 2010 was named “Winery of the Year” in James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion. Furthermore, the HVD vineyard, planted in 1908, is believed to be the world’s oldest Chardonnay plot. In all, the company owns eight of the 11 oldest vineyards in New South Wales.
